McKay Scholarship Program

The John M. McKay Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program, commonly known as the McKay Scholarship Program, allows parents of students with disabilities to choose the best academic environment for their children. This program provides a variety of options including the opportunity to attend a participating private school such as New Beginnings Christian Academy.

Over twenty thousand students state-wide, enrolled in 888 private schools and academies, participated in the McKay program during the 2008-2009 school year. All participating private schools must document their eligibility and conformity to state requirements for accredidation, health, safety, ethics and professional conduct in order to receive McKay funding.

The McKay Program offers parents the power of choice in their child's education, allowing parents to make informed decisions about their student's educational future. With average 07-08 scholarships of $7,295 per-student the McKay program gives parents the ability to find the educational institution that best meets their student's academic, emotional and spiritual needs and ensure a 'best-fit' that will promote long-term student success.

Eligibility and Application

In order to be eligible for the McKay Scholarship Program, a student must apply for the program prior to withdrawing from public school. Additionally students must have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan, and have been enrolled in a Florida public school during the prior school year. If your child meets these requirments you can apply by filing your intent directly on the McKay website or by contacting our Main Office.

*Please note that if you have a valid intent filed for the 2011-2012 school year that went unused, it did expire on February 1, 2012 and a new intent will need to be filed for the coming year.

In order to complete the filing process, either online or with our school registrar, please be sure to have the following information on-hand: your student's current school district, full name, date of birth and social security number as well as the full name, address of residence and social security number of the parent or legal guardian of the student.

The McKay Scholarships for Students With Disabilities program is an outstanding opportunity for parents to exercise the power of choice in meeting their student's complete educational needs and we look forward to working with you in equipping your family to enjoy all the benefits of Florida's School Choice programs.
